Medicine Cabinet Crafts

Did you ever make a God’s Eye (Ojo de Dios) in summer camp as a kid? When I was invited to teach some crafty classes at an event called MaxFunCon a few weeks ago, I thought it would be fun to recreate these childhood mementos. After all, the event happened in a distinctly camp-like setting at Lake Arrowhead. My friend Hannah tagged along to help assist me and we spent hours making colorful ojos. It’s an excellent way to use up scrap yarns, and they’re really fun to make.

Naturally, we started getting a bit loopy (repetitive crafting does that to a girl) and we decided to use toothpicks and embroidery floss to create God’s Eye necklaces to match our outfits. This of course got us thinking…what are the most ridiculous materials you could use to create a God’s Eye? What if you were in a pinch and didn’t have twigs and yarn available? We thought it might be funny to make one from Q-tips and dental floss. Useless, but funny.

Yep, I did it. Couldn’t help myself!

Wow! You really out did yourself. I tried this for the first time last year. For some reason my summer camp never taught us god’s eye. Here’s a link to a mobile I made using the god’s eye as the top:

Sister Diane sent me a link to your post! I really like the look of all those different yarns together. I will have to make one now! And the pendant – brilliant! I challenge you to make tiny earrings to match! I’m waiting to see!
nice! and totally not useless if you’re in a pinch!
As a 70s girl scout, I LOVE a god’s eye!
Ojos are next on the list of projects to do with my group of 4-7 yr olds that meets every other week.
A friend at a small hand-dyed yarn company donated massive amounts of gorgeous scraps to us.

That looks so wonderful!
Wow, freaky but these are exactly the same as a prayer item they make in the Tibetan tradition. Always fascinates me how many similarities there are in ancient cultures. Thx for posting &good luck with the store
That was an interesting stuff. i wish i could have one!
